Girls‘ Day @ IMW - On 25 April 2024, 9 schoolgirls visited us for Girls’ Day at the IMW, who were able to get to know the mechanical engineering course and our institute better through a wide range of activities!
As part of Girls' Day 2024, nine schoolgirls visited the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMW).
After a welcome and more detailed information on the topic of ‘What does a female mechanical engineer actually do?’, the visit to the IMW continued with the categorisation of mechanical engineering in today's world. Prof Lohrengel's presentation quickly made it clear that a lot of energy can be saved through modern mechanical engineering and that mechanical engineering therefore makes an important contribution to climate protection. For example, research is being carried out into lighter shafts for cars or popcorn as a resource-saving material.
The students then worked in small groups to analyse the components of a bicycle and independently assembled and calculated a brake, a chain drive and a crank bearing. The motto here was ‘hands-on mechanical engineering’ and they were able to develop an initial understanding of the technical terms ‘torque’ and ‘gear ratio’.
Then it was on to a very topical subject: CAD (Computer Aided Design) coupled with VR (Virtual Reality). Here, the students designed a car tyre as an example and then used VR glasses to view the installation in the complex vehicle assembly, as is already common practice in industry.
After a lunch break and a short tour of our institute, the students designed wooden coasters, which were laser-cut from wood in our student workshop ‘TU Create’.
