Innovative circular economy: Successful kick-off in Goslar

Innovative circular economy: Successful kick-off of the Circular Economy Future Lab at the Center for Digital Technologies in Goslar on 21 August 2024

Goslar, 21 August 2024 - The kick-off event for the new Circular Economy Future Lab at Clausthal University of Technology's Center for Digital Technologies (DIGIT) took place with great enthusiasm. Hosted at the GoTec Conference Centre, the event was opened by Christoph Willeke, Member of the Lower Saxony State Parliament. ‘It was a great start! I am delighted that this innovative project is being carried out here in Lower Saxony, laying another foundation stone for a sustainable future,’ emphasised Willeke.

With the participation of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IMW; Chair of Integrated Product Development, Prof. Dr David Inkermann) and the Institute of Software and Systems Engineering (ISSE) at Clausthal University of Technology, the Future Lab is dedicated to the development of sustainable, digital solutions for the efficient use of natural resources. With funding of 3.7 million euros from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science ‘zukunft.niedersachsen’ and the Volkswagen Foundation, digitalisation in particular is to be driven forward. The aim is to promote the circular economy through improved transparency, sharing models, reuse, repair services and automated information analysis.

‘Through digitalisation along all cycles as a driver of innovation, we are not only increasing the transparency of material flows and component states, but also enabling new digital service and business models that promote more sustainable product use,’ explained Prof. Dr Rausch.

The project is investigating three major sub-cycles: the utilisation and product cycle, the product design and component cycle and the recycling and material cycle. An interdisciplinary consortium consisting of Clausthal University of Technology, Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Leibniz University Hannover, Ostfalia University and other institutions is working closely with industrial partners such as Volkswagen AG, Siemens AG and many medium-sized companies.

Interested companies and organisations are cordially invited to participate in the project and thus make a contribution to a sustainable future.
